Calzones

Calzones are essentially a folded over pizza. Imagine a pizza dough layed-out with sauce, cheese, and toppings on one side of the pizza crust and nothing on the other, then the dough folded over on itself.

They are often referred to as stuffed pizza as well, or Italian turnovers. Regardless what you call them, they are simply another form of pizza.

In the U.S. I often see Calzones served with a dipping sauce, usually something described as Marinara Sauce...although I see lots of strange, sweet, processed red stuff served than I do a Marinara Sauce.

After the dough is folded over it is sealed together, either by simply pinching the ends together or by applying an egg wash. It is then baked in an oven, usually for a longer amount of time than a pizza and at a lower temperature. This allows the inside to heat properly without burning the outside.

In Italy the stuffing is primarily tomato, cheese, and ham. In the U.S. you can typically get any topping that the restaurant has on their menu as a stuffing ingredient.
