How About Dessert Pizza?

Dessert pizzas have gained popularity during the past 10 years. Most, if not all, of the national chains have one or more on their menus, and recipes are readily available in both cookbooks and online…although there are a lot of pretty bad recipes as well.

What are they?

Let’s face it…any time flat bread is covered with toppings it is generally referred to as a pizza. The national chains saw an opportunity to increase sales and simply took their standard dough and added sweet toppings.

Sweetness is a major part of these desserts. Adding sugar, chocolate, fruit and other sweet ingredients to a standard pizza crust…and presto!! However, the term gets thrown around a lot and more times than not is simply a means to attract attention.

Cookie dough, cake mix, quiche crust, and pie crusts are often substituted and classified as dessert pizza dough incorrectly. Call me old-fashioned…but if you are taking a box of cake mix, baking the mixture in a cake pan, and adding nuts and frosting…that is a CAKE not a pizza.

It is all about the kids…

I must admit that I am not a big fan. If I want to make dessert…I’ll make dessert. If I want a chocolate chip cookie, I’ll bake a batch of cookies not make a chocolate chip pizza.

However, our family makes our share of sweet pizzas…here is why. If I am already making the dough it is easy enough to make a little extra or set some dough aside for dessert. So, I guess I don’t make a fruit pizza only for the sake of making a dessert…but the other way around. Besides, the kids love it! And it is all about the kids.

This is one of the easiest ways of getting the kids into the kitchen. Dad has the dough all rolled out waiting, the assortment of toppings are standing by; they get to create their own Mini Desserts adding whatever flavors they like. A couple of minutes in the oven…and smiles all around.
