Hawaiian Pizza Recipe

The Hawaiian Pizza is generally believed not to have originated in Hawaii. In fact, the pizza is not popular on the Hawaiian islands either. It is most likely associated with the state of Hawaii because of the use of pineapple in the recipe.

The actual origin of this pizza recipe is not known. However, one possibility is that it originated in Germany of all places. In the 1950's German television chef Clemens Wilmenrod popularized an open face sandwich called Toast Hawaii that included melted cheese, pineapple, and ham.

This pizza is a favorite in Australia where it makes up over 15% of pizza sales in that country.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 Cup Pizza Sauce
  • 1 1/2 Cups Grated Mozzarella Cheese
  • 1/2 Cup Grated Provolone Cheese
  • 1/2 Cup Ham, Thinly Sliced (Canadian Bacon can also be used
  • 1 8oz Can Pineapple Chunks, Drained
  • 1/4 Cup Sliced Red Onion - Optional

Directions:

  1. Spread pizza sauce evenly over pizza crust
  2. Spread remaining ingredients evenly over pizza in the order given
