Chef Batali has written 6 cookbooks about his love of Italian ingredients and food.

While pizza is not the focus of the cookbooks, several of them have a few pizza recipes. I am an Italian food fan besides a pizza fan, and his books combine authenticity from his years spent working and travelling in Italy with the understanding and skills of a very talented chef.

He writes in the same manner he speaks, with a bit of humor and with a passion that brings his writing to life and encouraging the reader to try the recipes he writes about.

My two favorites are Simple Italian Food: Recipes From My Two Villages, and Molto Italiano: 327 Simple Italian Recipes To Cook At Home.

Simple Italian Food

This was his first cookbook written in 1998. There are more than 250 traditional Italian recipes that Mario adds innovative twists and designed for the home chef.

There are recipes for salads, pastas, ragus, pizzas, grilled specialties, and desserts. The recipes combines is simple approach to food and cooking, a sensible approach without fussy preparation.

Published in 2005, the cookbook combines great recipes with Chef Batali’s sense of humor and wit, with stories of his travels through Italy and historic references.

Some of the recipes were included in his other books or you may have seen them on his T.V. show, but there are many new recipes as well.

Mario is prone to say that “the trick to cooking is that there is not trick.” He also believes that the best cooking is done at home, not in restaurants. He encourages a sense of family, the importance of fresh, quality ingredients, and creates recipes that meet these passions
