Create a Fantastic Vegetable Pizza RecipeWe decided to create a separate section for vegetable pizzas to highlight the benefits and show the many ways that vegetable and pizza can be combined to make a wonderful meal for your family. Convenient Using vegetables as pizza toppings is a convenient method of clearing out the refrigerator. Our family is always looking ways to make use of produce that we already have in the house. Onions, peppers, mushrooms, garlic, or tomatoes are great toppings for pizza and usually vegetables that we already have in the house. No need to make a special trip to the store...just open your produce drawer and pull out your families favorites. Our Roasted Vegetable Pizza is a family favorite!
Cheap The other benefit of using vegetables is that they are cheap. Even if a trip to the store is necessary, shopping for vegetables to go with your pizza is an inexpensive way to make a great tasting meal. It is possible to feed a family of 4 on less than $5.00 making a great tasting homemade vegetable pizza. Healthy Ok, I confess...I do not eat enough vegetables. The Department of Health suggests that we eat at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables each day to receive the health benefits. Studies have shown that eating the recommended allowance can help to prevent heart disease and some cancers. Unfortunately, I am not alone...only 15% of Americans actually achieve this target. Many vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals, are trans-fat free and high in fiber...and they are not processed like so many of our
foods are today.
Getting Kids to Eat Vegetables What better way to get your kids to eat more vegetables than putting them on pizza? Who am I foolin'...this is a great way to get me to eat more vegetables! Besides being healthy and better for you, the vegetables provide a much lighter meal. Our kids are pretty good
vegetable eaters...maybe it is because they grew up eating them on vegetable pizza's...
Favorites Here are some of our favorite vegetables for pizza toppings:
The vegetables can be cut and placed on the pizza raw, then baked along with the pizza dough. We will often saute the vegetables in olive oil quickly and then add to the uncooked pizza. This will give the vegetables a great flavor by bringing out the sweetness in most vegetables, caramelizing their natural sugars. In contrast, putting them on uncooked will leave more of a raw vegetable taste. Both are excellent, but provide distinctly different flavors. Grilling vegetables is another way to "pre-cook" the vegetables and bring out the natural sugars of the vegetables. An added benefit is the "grill taste" that is added to the vegetables. Using different combinations of vegetables and different cooking techniques you can create your own homemade pizza recipe. Storing DoughPizza: The Perfect FoodPizza is quite possibly the world's perfect food!It is eaten and loved by both young and old alike, women like pizza as well as men, it slices through religious and racial backgrounds, and has no cultural bounds. The dough can be stored in the refrigerator for one or two days. Place the dough in an oiled bowl and cover. Freezing the dough also makes homemade pizza easy. I often make a double batch of dough and freeze some for later use. Lightly oil a dough ball and place in a plastic zip-lock bag. Use a separate bag for each dough ball to prevent sticking. Allow the dough to thaw before using.
